The Jewish Stuff

At its core, Judaism is an earth-based religion. Natural cycles dictate the Jewish year to such a large extent that trees have their own New Year on Tu B’Shvat and major holidays fall on the full or new moon. This weekend we'll be observing Shabbat, the Jewish day of rest. Here's what to expect.

Friday Night

We'll welcome in the sabbath bride (AKA: The spirit of rest, AKA: Zoe), with a short Shabbat service led by our amazing Jewish Ritualist, Ilyse. We'll explore the concept of sacred time as well as sacred space just before two rock bands melt our faces.

Saturday Wedding Ceremony

Zoe and John will begin the ceremony by walking around each other seven times symbolizing the centrality of their relationship in their lives and corresponding to the seven blessings from friends and family that will be given throughout the ceremony. Look out for other Jewish elements like the smashing of the glass and the "chuppah" of redwoods.

Saturday Night

We end Shabbat with a short Havdalah service, Zoe's favorite ritual. After dinner, we'll form a circle on the dance floor to say goodbye to the Sabbath and come back into our bodies. We'll sing a nigun (a wordless melody) and activate each of our five senses just in time to get dancing.

So, as they say, come with a friend in hand and a watermelon in your heart. We look forward to sharing these traditions with you.
